Mauritius: Island paradise A jewel in the Indian Ocean, the tropical island of Mauritius is simply unforgettable. Although it’s located off the coast of Africa, its vibrant culture is heavily influenced by its past as an English, French and Dutch colony, and by its Asian population. The island’s population of 1.25 million people is famously multicultural: a harmonious blend of Hindus, Creoles, Muslims, Chinese and Europeans. The official language is English, but everyone speaks French and Creole, a local dialect with French roots. After gaining its independence from Britain in 1968 and becoming a republic in 1992, the island has flourished. Mauritius boasts a stable democratic government and a growing economy with significant developments in the banking and telecom sectors. Tourism is one of the island’s most reliable core industries – visitors are drawn to the welcoming people, the fascinating melting-pot culture and the remarkable physicality of the island comprising volcanoes, mountains, waterfalls and lush vegetation perfect for trekking and wildlife observation.

Non-citizens are able to acquire residential property in Mauritius if such property is part of an Integrated Resort Scheme (IRS). Banyan Tree Corniche Bay is one of the first developments to be classified as an IRS, and non-citizens are able to purchase and own freehold property in the scheme without undue complications. Save for a government tax of $70,000, there is no other registration and/or stamp duty to be paid on the purchase of a property which is part of an IRS Development. Becoming a resident of Mauritius has a myriad of tax benefits; there is no Inheritance or Capital Gains Taxation, while Corporate Tax, Income Tax and VAT are a maximum of 15%.
